Ms. Portia Hopkins, LCSW is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Therapist in the beautiful state of Texas.
Ms. Hopkins is a native Texan with a classic Southern accent she has grown to love. Maybe you will too.
She is a proud graduate of Prairie View A&M University where she earned a B.A. in Communications with a minor in Social and Integrated Science, as well as a graduate of Texas A&M University-Commerce where she earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work. She has also spent a significant part of her life as a Doctoral student in higher education, and she is currently ABD from an Ed.D in Curriculum and Instruction.
For over 20 years I have worked with individuals, families, and groups seeking therapeutic support. My career in social services ranges from work for the State of Texas in health and human services as well as family protective services. I have worked with victims and offenders of domestic violence as a Battering Intervention and Prevention Counselor. My years spent at two levels I trauma centers in a major metropolitan area taught me critical thinking and problem-solving skills that I continue to perfect up to this very moment.
It is my psychotherapeutic work and experience that also continue to inform my professional and personal life daily. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a mainstay for my practice as the theory and its applications continue to offer hope and direction in many areas throughout the human lifespan. Most frequently I offer therapy and support for anxiety, life, and career transition, grief, and loss as well as recovery from abuse, trauma, and issues related to self-care and self-esteem.
Happiness is an inside job. I wholeheartedly believe that we get to creatively sponsor our own happiness. Books are my thing, my happy place, and my refuge on a rainy day. I am an avid camper and traveler. I spend as much time as possible in the fertile, green countryside admiring the world from the front porch of our family’s homestead. Legendary traveler and even lived in London for a bit. I have never watched Game of Thrones…
I am a mother to two children whose maturity and sense of humor give no clue to the fact that they have secretly agreed to never flush the toilet.
I show compassion and kindness to the world by first showing it to myself. I work hard. I play hard. I reflect and meditate often. I laugh a lot because it is great medicine.
Clarity is key. I seek to stay clear from within so that I may be of service without.
