Sophia Akyeampong holds a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology from  California Baptist University with a focus in Marriage Family Therapist/Professional Clinical Counselor. She holds a Bachelor of Art in Psychology from California State University of San Bernardino, and an Associate of Arts in Liberal Studies from Chaffey College.

She enjoys using some Gestalt interventions, Narrative interventions, art therapy, and family systems approach. She also uses art and music in therapy and she gives homework between sessions.

Akyeampong was initially drawn to the field by curiosity and life experience. As a young mother, she had a son with many behavioral needs but no trauma experienced. She became her son’s advocate for speech services, an IEP, and mental health therapy. She realized that she needed the education to push her son toward success. She entered the field to support her son with autism, to understand why two people can react so differently from the same experience, and to be that safe space for a person to process their inner thoughts/feelings, and to empower them to work toward healing.

She was born in London and moved to California at the age of 13. Her family’s background is West African. They are from Ghana. She grew up in a bilingual home and is the oldest of her siblings and was raised in a blended family. She struggled throughout middle and high school and was a bit of a rebel. She worked many different jobs growing up specifically in retail so she has a lot of experience talking to people. She feels the parts of her youth that impacted her professional development were the times she struggled in school with her behaviors, not knowing how to complete a college application, not understanding the options for her after high school, and needing a non-judgmental person with whom to speak.

When Akyeampong isn’t working, she enjoys traveling, doing arts and crafts projects with her kids, listening to music, and attending concerts. She loves shopping for candles (a bit of an addiction!), watching movies, and going for long drives.
