Dr. Gary R. Lewis is a California Board of Psychology Licensed Psychologist.
Dr. Lewis has worked for over 28 years as a psychologist in a variety of settings. He obtained his BSN in 1975, and a BA in Religious Studies in 1981. He transitioned from the medical field to mental health and received his MA in Counseling Psychology and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, with a subspecialty in Addiction Treatment, from Alliant University (formally known as the APA accredited United States International University) in 1988. His doctoral dissertation looked at the correlation between unsafe sexual practice and suicide probability and was chaired by the head of the Alliant University Substance Abuse Treatment Department. He completed his first year of internship at the Southwood Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Hospital and his second year at the San Diego AIDS Foundation and AIDS Assistance Fund. He is also a member of the American Psychological Association, the National Register of Health Service Psychologist, and a member of the National Honor Society in Psychology (PSI CHI).
Dr. Lewis has worked in the field of mental health in a number of areas including research, instructor for students at the master and doctoral levels, inpatient hospital, forensic, and private practice settings. He has also published chapters in a number of publications. He has experience in the treatment of anxiety, depression, relationship concerns, adjustment difficulties, and stress management. He has a broad background in working with men and women in a variety of culturally and ethnically diverse populations, including individuals from the LGBTI, and Gender Identity communities. He has substantial training and experience working with men’s issues and adults with TBI, PTSD, and those who were sexually, physically, and emotionally abused. Also, individuals who are currently experiencing addictions both with and without a coexisting diagnosis.
Dr. Lewis uses a collaborative approach working with and involving clients in their treatment. He utilizes cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness, and psychoeducational approaches to address the issues underlying the maladaptive concerns/behaviors the client wishes to alter.
