Dr. Jennifer McKelvey, PhD, is a clinical psychologist known for her empathetic and individualized approach to therapy. She holds a PhD and MA in Clinical and School Psychology from Hofstra University, and she completed her postdoctoral fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital with Harvard Medical School. Her clinical training includes a psychology internship at Bellevue Hospital in NYC, and she holds dual undergraduate degrees in Psychology from Queens College, CUNY, and in Dance from The Juilliard School.
Originally from South Korea and raised in California, Dr. McKelvey’s journey in psychology began after a professional ballet career. Moving to New York City to attend Juilliard, she developed a fascination with human behavior, eventually leading her to a career focused on understanding motivations and unique paths individuals take. Dr. McKelvey’s approach is highly personalized, drawing from a range of therapeutic techniques, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), CBT for Psychosis (CBTp), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)-informed interventions, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). She is also certified in the Structured Interview for Psychosis-risk Syndromes (SIPS) and the Scale for the Assessment of Prodromal Symptoms (SOPS), allowing her to offer specialized support in psychosis-risk syndromes.
Dr. McKelvey’s therapeutic philosophy centers on meeting clients where they are, creating a safe, open space where communication is encouraged. Known for her quirky, independent, and honest nature, she strives to offer a judgment-free environment where clients can explore their unique challenges. Having worked with clients in both inpatient and outpatient settings, Dr. McKelvey has supported individuals facing a range of issues, from life adjustments to severe psychotic disorders.
Since moving to Tennessee, Dr. McKelvey finds balance in nature, reading, and creative hobbies like pottery. Her interests reflect a commitment to growth, both personally and professionally, as she continually adapts her therapeutic approach to fit each client’s unique journey.
