Melissa Zackery, PMHNP-BC, is a Board-Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner driven by a compassionate commitment to understanding and supporting her clients. She grew up in Georgetown, Guyana, deeply influenced by the vibrant culture and values of her South American roots. Her mother, a dedicated nurse, was a powerful role model, whose unwavering dedication to her patients instilled in Melissa a profound respect for the nursing field. Growing up, Melissa witnessed the stigma surrounding mental health in her community, with relatives struggling with untreated mental health disorders. This experience sparked her interest in the mental health field and inspired her to address the barriers people face in accessing essential care.
Melissa initially pursued a career as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) to provide comprehensive healthcare, earning her FNP degree from Purdue University Global. As she continued her work, she quickly recognized the significant gap in mental health support, especially for those who were underserved or overlooked. Motivated by this realization, she specialized further, becoming a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner through additional training at Purdue University Global. With a BSN from Western Governors University and her RN credentials from Care Hope College, Melissa brings a rich background in both general and mental health nursing.
Melissa believes that mental health treatment requires a holistic approach—one that addresses the physical, emotional, and social dimensions of each person’s well-being. Guided by empathy, an open mind, and a profound respect for her clients’ unique journeys, Melissa strives to create a supportive, non-judgmental space where individuals can feel heard and understood. Her approach centers on collaborative partnership, working closely with clients to find the best path forward, empowering them to regain control and resilience.
Clients often describe Melissa as a caring and attentive listener who deeply values each person's individuality and unique needs. Her dedication to creating a safe and compassionate environment makes her a trusted partner in her clients’ mental health journeys. For Melissa, the most rewarding part of her work is witnessing the transformative impact of treatment as clients gain control over their symptoms and thrive. This keeps her inspired and committed to making a positive difference.
Outside of work, Melissa loves spending time with her family and traveling to new places. These experiences, combined with her upbringing, fuel her understanding of diverse perspectives and strengthen her commitment to reducing stigma and advocating for mental health.
