Dr. Marc Kossmann, PsyD is a Board-Certified Psychologist with a profound dedication to helping individuals understand themselves better and find creative ways to lead meaningful and purposeful lives. Growing up in a complex, multi-cultural family in Poughkeepsie, New York, Dr. Kossmann developed an early fascination with the workings of the human mind. His upbringing in a bilingual household, with Italian as the primary language at home, and the influence of his father's experiences during WWII, deeply shaped his understanding of trauma and resilience.
Dr. Kossmann initially embarked on a pre-law path during his undergraduate studies at New York University. However, a growing interest in psychology courses, driven by a desire to understand his family dynamics and his own mind, led him to pursue a career in psychology. By his senior year, he was already immersed in graduate-level classes, having taken every psychology course available. This unexpected shift in focus ultimately led him to obtain his Doctor of Psychology from Widener University’s Institute for Graduate Clinical Psychology.
Dr. Kossmann's approach to therapy is heavily influenced by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), grounded in a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) framework, and always considers the larger psychodynamic context of a client's life. He believes in working collaboratively with his clients, recognizing them as the ultimate experts in their own lives. With over 30 years of clinical experience, Dr. Kossmann brings a wealth of general knowledge and practical expertise, ensuring that treatment is a joint effort between therapist and client.
Throughout his career, Dr. Kossmann has found great satisfaction in helping others achieve self-understanding and personal growth. His commitment to client well-being is paramount, and he strives to create a therapeutic environment where clients feel empowered to explore and address their challenges. In addition to his direct clinical work, Dr. Kossmann has also thrived in clinical management roles, most recently overseeing a team of 230-250 doctoral-level clinical psychologists across all 50 states. He finds immense fulfillment in case consultation and supervision, which allows him to multiply his impact within the field.
Outside of his professional life, Dr. Kossmann is an adventurous spirit with a deep connection to nature. He is an avid backpacker, frequently embarking on solo backcountry trips, and has climbed half of the 46 High Peaks in the Adirondack Mountains, with 23 more to conquer. His love for the outdoors extends to kayaking and canoeing, hobbies he further engages with by building kayaks and canoes. Additionally, Dr. Kossmann enjoys motorcycling and has developed a passion for hydroponic gardening.
Dr. Kossmann’s journey as a clinician has been significantly influenced by his early exposure to Eastern philosophy and mindfulness practices. His involvement in martial arts training led him to mindfulness meditation, where he participated in multiple intensive retreats, including those with renowned teachers such as Thich Nhat Hanh and Jon Kabat-Zinn. These experiences have had a lasting impact on his therapeutic approach, reinforcing his belief in the importance of mindfulness and the holistic well-being of his clients.
Dr. Marc Kossmann remains committed to guiding his clients toward self-discovery, resilience, and the pursuit of a life filled with purpose and meaning.
